As part of our continuous safeguarding approach we know the importance of keeping up to date records about pupils’ medical needs. On entry to the school you will be asked to complete an information form highlighting important medical information about your child. We also urge you to keep us informed of any changes to this information as it is vital in ensuring the correct level of care for pupils.
In all cases where medication needs to be given throughout the school day, we ask for you to complete a ‘Pupil Medication Permission Form’. This is also required for medication which needs to be in school, though may only be needed in certain situations rather than taken daily, e.g. epipens or asthma pumps.
Although we are happy to administer prescribed antibiotics we request that, where possible, they are given at home. For example, a course of antibiotics that needs to be taken three times a day can be administered before school, after school and at bedtime, thus avoiding the need to send medication to school.
These instructions are designed for the parents or guardians of a child who has sustained a minor head injury at school today.
Our first-aiders have seen your child and considered that they were well enough to stay at school. However, as a precaution, you are advised to observe your child more closely than usual over the next 24 hours for any problems that may occur as a result of this head injury.
You are advised to watch for the following signs in particular, and seek further advice immediately if concerned.
Your child may feel sleepy as a result of their head injury. Please allow them to sleep if they wish. However, if your child is unusually drowsy and does not stir in their sleep, is difficult to wake, or does not respond normally when woken, then you should seek further medical advice.
You should also seek further advice immediately:
- If your child’s headache is not relieved by simple painkillers such as paracetamol (Calpol), or becomes increasingly severe
- If your child continues to complain of feeling sick or vomits more than 2 or 3 times
- If your child complains of any problems with their eyesight, especially double vision
